Jägala Stronghold
Estonia's
largest stronghold by inner court area was Jägala stronghold (erected
in the 7th and 8th century AD). It was situated on the banks of the
Jägala river at a stone throw from the sea. This location must have been inhabited by man already at the end of the stone age some 5000 years ago, as can be inferred from combed ware and corded ware findings.
The stronghold was badly damaged during the construction of the hydroelectric power plant in 1922, when an additional power station was being build about 1km upsteam to supply the Luther milboard factory with energy. Both of the enterprises were destroyed by the retreating Red Army in 1941.
This forlorn site was brought back to life in 2002 when Eesti Energia reconstructed the power plant. Nowadays, it produces not only electricity but also "spiritual" energy of the people as well, available for everyone to use. (this additional supply is based upon the Estonian philosophy of drawing their energy from nature)
