Sliding cultstone
There are approximately 100 stones with man-made cup-marks on them within the area of the reserve.
The ritual of wearing cup-marks on stones was quite widespread in the
first millennium BC, and was connected with fertility rituals.
The reserve's biggest cup-marked stone towers some 3.5 metres in height in the paddock beyond Kostivere village.
According to folk tradition, the Kostivere sliding-stone possesses
powers to cure infertility. To be cured, the woman just has to slide
down the rock bare-bottomed. The groove is still quite visible on the
surface !
